As a former athlete and current gym goer, I have chosen Nike both due to its direct ties to me as well as its long standing history within the sports world. More specifically I will be looking into the streetwear portion of their company which has grown as their shoe line originally intended for basketball has become a staple fashion piece in wardrobes across the world. How a brand has been able to diversify unintentionally from sportswear to a fashion statement has me fascinated in how consumer behavior was able to change Nike’s consumer market without any direct intentionality.
For this project I will be using Nike’s style page to highlight how their consumers have used athletic shoes as fashion pieces. I will also be using their sales data over the years to evaluate how fashion trends impacted their sales and profits. Lastly I will be using fashion history sources to evaluate when and how these trends became popular to find where these trends may have been the leading action in the sales and profit changes.
